Additional Tables for “Small Spaces for Different Faces: Political Science Scholarship on Asian Pacific Americans” (PS, July 2004)

These tables were constructed for our analysis for the article “Small Spaces for Different Faces: Political Science Scholarship on Asian Pacific Americans,” PS: Political Science and Politics (July 2004). Due to space limitations, we were unable to include most of the figures we constructed, so we present them here for any readers who wish to see additional data. For explanations of our methodology, please refer to the PS article.
Link to Tables One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven.
One important note on the tables: each article is tallied in only one category. The tables showing articles by year for different ethnic/racial groups (Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), African Americans, American Indians, Latinos) show unique articles: i.e., an article tallied in one table is not tallied in another table. By the same token, articles tallied in the “Multiple Groups” column are not tallied in the tables for specific ethnic/racial groups.
There is a slightly different coding rule for APAs than for other ethnic/racial groups, however. Since our primary concern was to identify all publications on APAs, articles which included APAs as a subject are always tallied in the APA table, whether or not other groups were also discussed in the same articles (Table 4). In contrast, African American, American Indian, and Latino articles are counted as such if they focused exclusively or largely on these groups (Tables 5 through 7).
Therefore, the tables somewhat understate the number of articles in which African Americans or Latinos were the subject. Some of articles that focused on those groups are counted for the APA column. When articles focused on both African Americans and Latinos (but not on APAs), they are tallied in the “Multiple Groups” table (Table 8). Most articles in the “Multiple Groups” table focused on these two groups. Given the coding rules, no articles that focused on APAs are included in the “Multiple Groups” column.
The “Other Articles on Race” table (Table 9) tallies articles that dealt with race, but focused on whites. These articles were usually studies of white racial attitudes.
The “All Articles on Race” table (Table 3) represents totals from all tables, including the “Other Articles on Race” table.
If possible, at a future date we will post a list of all APA articles identified in our analysis, sorted by journal.
